Heavy Rain in Coming Days May Cause UK Flooding but Won't Reverse Drought
Forecasters said some areas will get heavy downpours, but rainfall will be uneven and water shortages will continue after weeks of heat and dry weather.
- On Wednesday, the Met Office warned of heavy rain across parts of northern England and north and west Wales, with rainfall expected to reach the Midlands by evening and most areas turning dry by mid-morning.
- Persistent dry weather across the UK has left more than 27 million people under hosepipe restrictions, with Thames Water reporting London reservoir storage at 74% and Farmoor Reservoir at 92% full.
- Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern described Wednesday as a "very showery day," cautioning that precipitation is "not going to solve the drought situation overnight" because rainfall will be highly variable and come largely as showers.
- Wessex Water began a hosepipe ban for 1.4 million customers across Bath, Somerset, Dorset, and Wiltshire on Tuesday, while northern areas expect frequent showers with hail and thunder accompanying the rainfall.
- The Met Office notes that while some areas will experience the "first meaningful rain for a long time," conditions will become drier again over the weekend as the unsettled weather system moves through.
