The 150th anniversary of the Festival is celebrated in Bayreuth. Unlike usual, there was no staging of a Wagner opera at the opening in the anniversary year, but a performance of Beethoven's ninth symphony. The work was also played at the foundation stone laying of the Festspielhaus in 1872. Later Richard Wagner had the complete "Ring des Nibelungen" performed there for the first time and thus wrote music history.
