Merz Plans Ukraine Talks Wednesday with Trump, Zelenskyy, European Leaders
KYIV CITY MUNICIPALITY, KYIV CITY REGION, AUG 11 – The virtual meeting will address security guarantees, territorial issues, and coordinated pressure on Russia to ensure Ukraine participates in peace negotiations, German Chancellor Merz said.
- In a pre-summit push, Merz invited Trump, Zelenskyy, NATO's Rutte, and European leaders to a virtual meeting on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.
- On Monday, EU Foreign Ministers held emergency talks as Kaja Kallas said any US-Russia deal must include Ukraine and the EU.
- According to the German chancellery, the agenda will cover pressure on Russia, territorial issues, security guarantees for Kyiv, and peace talks ahead of the Trump-Putin meeting.
- In a joint statement, leaders from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Britain and Finland and Ursula von der Leyen said `The path to peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukraine` and emphasized that international borders must not be changed by force.
- Ahead of the Alaska summit, Europe fears Ukraine will be excluded, and Europe fears Kyiv may face unacceptable territorial compromises, as President Trump prepares to meet President Putin on Friday.
