Seattle-Area Teenager Dies in Lacrosse Accident
Paramedics kept Eliot Abramson alive before surgery, but the Mercer Island High School sophomore died from injuries suffered at a recruiting showcase.
Mercer Island High School sophomore Eliot Abramson died Sunday from injuries sustained after being struck in the back of the neck by a lacrosse ball during a June 1 showcase event at Islander Stadium.
The injury caused Abramson to lose consciousness; a firefighter "kept Eliot's heart beating" before he was transferred to Harborview Medical Center for emergency surgery.
A 6-foot-2 midfielder on the MIHS 2026 roster, Eliot had recently obtained his driver's license and made the decision to be an organ donor, a choice his family now honors.
This tragedy marks the second high school lacrosse fatality in the past year, following the May 6, 2025, death of 16-year-old Dylan Veselic in Ohio from a similar craniocervical injury.
The Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association serves as the governing body for boys' lacrosse in Washington, as the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association does not oversee the sport.
