Mercedes Expands Recall to 30,000 Cars over Leaking Brake Hoses
Mercedes says brake hoses may leak or rupture without warning, and dealers will replace both front hoses at no charge for 30,064 vehicles.
- Mercedes-Benz USA expanded its recall of 223-platform S-Class vehicles to 30,064 units under NHTSA designation 26V638, addressing potential front brake hose ruptures that may occur without warning.
- Mercedes previously blamed climatic exposure but discarded that hypothesis after data from non-US markets arrived; the manufacturer now identifies thermal and mechanical stresses as the root cause, with supplier Continental Automotive Technologies failing to meet durability specifications.
- The recall population includes 16,881 examples of the S 580 4MATIC and 7,143 units of the S 500 4MATIC. Ruptured hoses cause brake fluid loss, degrading performance and increasing stopping distances, though zero crashes have been reported to the US subsidiary.
- Dealers will replace both front-axle brake hoses at no charge to affected owners. Notifications will arrive by first-class mail no later than November 27, 2026.
- The recall encompasses vehicles produced between February 2, 2021, and November 28, 2024. Documentation confirms that vehicles manufactured after the cut-off date utilize updated hoses meeting the German automaker's durability specifications.
