As the clock is running out on the current rules, MEP vote for substantive changes to the controversial chat-scanning measures while agreeing to extend the temporary rules for fighting child sexual abuse material online.
MEPs approve an amendment prohibiting the indiscriminate scanning of private communications in Europe and demands that any such surveillance be backed up by an individualized court order and a well-founded suspicion of crime.
The European Parliament has agreed to extend until August 2027 the ability for online platforms to search for child pornography in our messages, but with new conditions. This text, which aims to renew the current framework for voluntary detection for the purpose of protecting minors, is now being negotiated within the trilogue.
