Men Jailed for Stabbing London Journalist 'on Behalf of the Iranian State'
Prosecutors said the attack was planned for at least a year and carried out on behalf of the Iranian state, with one defendant driving the getaway car.
On Friday, Romanian nationals George Stana, 25, and Nandito Badea, 21, were sentenced to a combined 20 years in prison for stabbing Iran International journalist Pouria Zeraati in Wimbledon on 29 March 2024, an attack a judge concluded was orchestrated "on behalf of the Iranian state."
Judge Bobbie Cheema-Grubb ruled evidence pointed to state-ordered violence, concluding "oppressive regimes tend to do all they can to suppress opposition, they cannot abide the serious scrutiny that fearless journalists provide." Iran International has been designated a terrorist organization by Tehran due to its critical coverage.
"Hostile reconnaissance" preceded the attack, with Stana and Badea visiting the property eight times across five dates before stabbing Zeraati in the thigh and fleeing from Heathrow Airport to Switzerland in a Mazda getaway car.
In a victim impact statement, Zeraati told police the incident left him "scared and anxious," forcing him to relocate abroad "for fear of any reprisals" following the attack that left him bleeding in the street.
UK security officials claim Iran is behind a growing number of plots on British soil, with MI5 head Ken McCallum reporting that more than 20 potentially lethal Iran-backed plots have been disrupted since 2022.
