Men who inhaled laughing gas as they went over 130mph in 30mph zone jailed for fatal crash
Police said the pair reached 139mph in a 30mph zone and inhaled nitrous oxide before the crash that killed Sylvester Abayomi.
On Friday, Manchester Crown Court sentenced Uways Hussain to 11 years 8 months and Usmon Mahmood to 12 years 9 months for the fatal March 9 crash on Kingsway that killed Sylvester Abayomi.
Footage captured Hussain and Mahmood speeding at 139mph in a 30 zone before the collision. Judge Nicholas Dean said their actions showed a "flagrant disregard for the safety of other road users" and risk-taking "seemingly for the thrill of it."
Abayomi was driving to work on a green light when the Golf GTi ran a red light, striking him fatally. His partner, Denise Doyle, described him as "kind, dedicated and full of life."
Police traced Hussain via his Apple Watch after the pair discussed fleeing the scene. Mahmood's conviction for aiding and abetting is rare for a passenger, according to Greater Manchester Police.
Both defendants face eight-year driving bans and extended tests. Judge Dean noted Hussain's previous 12 month driving ban from October 2024 for drug driving, calling the crash "wholly unnecessary and entirely avoidable.
