Slain Minnesota Lawmaker to Lie in State Before Funeral
- On Friday, June 27, the Minnesota State Capitol rotunda will be open from noon to 5 p.m. for the public to honor Melissa and Mark Hortman, who will be officially commemorated there.
- The lying in state follows their assassination on the morning of June 14 by Vance Boelter, who posed as a police officer and was charged with their murders and additional attacks.
- Authorities found Boelter’s SUV stocked with firearms, notebooks listing officials’ names, and he fled on foot before his arrest near Green Isle on June 15 after a two-day manhunt.
- Governor Tim Walz said Melissa and Mark Hortman deserve this honor, calling it the right action if the family chooses, and noted public memorials help with healing.
- A private funeral for Melissa Hortman is set for 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, and she will be recognized as the first woman elected exclusively to the Minnesota House to receive the honor of lying in state.
