Suspect in 1994 Murder of Seattle Middle School Student Arrested
A 63-year-old man was charged with the 1991 murder of Melinda Freeman after a $1 million reward and new tips helped solve the cold case, police said.
- More than 30 years after the killing, Victoria Police charged a 63-year-old man with murder in Melinda Freeman's death; he will face Melbourne Magistrates' Court.
- On October 4, 1991, Freeman, 27, was found dead inside her Yea Road home in Whittlesea after her husband returned to find the front door open and her body on the top-storey landing.
- Victoria Police say an anonymous tip in 2018 advanced the inquiry, and a $1,000,000 reward announced in 2022 helped after homicide detectives lacked a breakthrough.
- Freeman's son was only an infant when his mother was killed, and earlier the same day Melinda Freeman and Freeman's husband attended a family reunion before arriving home at about 4pm and having dinner.
- Police will allege the suspect and Melinda Freeman were known to each other, and a 63-year-old man was arrested at his Greensborough home after police said the burglary may have been staged.
