UCLA’s Megan Grant Ties Division I Softball Home Run Record with Her 37th of the Season
Grant’s 37th homer matched Laura Espinoza’s 1995 mark, and she can break the record in the Big Ten championship game.
On Friday, UCLA senior Megan Grant tied the NCAA Division I softball single-season home run record with her 37th home run during a Big Ten Tournament semifinal against Wisconsin. She matched the mark set by former Arizona player Laura Espinoza in 1995.
Grant has been in a season-long pursuit of the record against Oklahoma freshman catcher Kendall Wells. Wells remains at 36 home runs after the Sooners were eliminated from the Southeastern Conference Tournament early Thursday.
The senior reached the milestone in 54 games, significantly faster than the 72 games Espinoza required. Grant has maintained a.478 batting average this season, establishing her among the nation's top 10 hitters.
"I'm truly honored," Grant said after the game. She aims to break the record during the Big Ten championship game against Nebraska on Saturday, though her focus remains on team success.
Earlier this week, the San Bruno, California, native was selected fourth overall by the Portland Cascade in the Athletes Unlimited Softball League college draft. UCLA teammate Jordan Woolery also secured a professional spot in the league.
