The critically endangered calf is bottle-fed every two hours after her mother rejected her, and members get a five-day preview before public viewing.
- On Wednesday, Smithsonian National Zoo officials announced that Linh Mai, the first elephant calf born at the zoo in nearly 25 years, will make her public debut on April 22, Earth Day.
- Nhi Linh gave birth to Linh Mai at the Elephant Community Center on February 2, 2026, following a 21-month pregnancy. The calf arrived after nearly two years of gestation.
- Linh Mai, whose name means "spirit blossom" in Vietnamese, weighed 308 pounds at birth. Since mother Nhi Linh appeared uncomfortable, the calf is being raised by "Auntie" Bozie and Swarna.
- Smithsonian National Zoo members gain exclusive access to view Two-month-old Linh Mai for five days before the Elephant Community Center opens to the general public on April 22.
- Asian elephants are listed as endangered by the IUCN Red List, with around 50,000 adults worldwide, and experts note that this population is decreasing every year.
