Meet Cuatro, a B.C. Emu Born with 4 Legs and Adopted by Ducklings
The breeder is using leg braces and duckling companions as x-rays will determine whether Cuatro can stay, move to a sanctuary or remain at home.
- On Saturday, June 6, an emu chick named Cuatro was born at Back To Nature Acres farm near Nanaimo with two extra non-functioning legs.
- Breeder Celina Knuff initially mistook the extra limbs for an umbilical cord, but soon realized they require specialized daily care; the legs are non-functional.
- To fix a birth deformity where one foot clasped into a fist, Knuff used leg braces within days, successfully allowing Cuatro to waddle after birth siblings attacked him, prompting introduction of two ducklings for socialization.
- Unlike other chicks typically kept for two weeks before sale, Cuatro will not be sold; Knuff remains committed to ensuring his quality of life and ongoing health monitoring.
- Pending x-ray results confirming he remains pain-free, Cuatro will either join a sanctuary with his adopted siblings or stay at home, where he continues eating, drinking, and exploring.
