Medicare GLP-1 Discount Has One Catch: Some Sick Patients Don’t Qualify
The temporary program caps copays at $50 a month as CMS evaluates broader coverage and potential Medicare spending impacts.
On Monday, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz announced approximately 600,000 seniors enrolled in the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program during its first two months, with costs capped at $50 monthly.
Designed to address high medication costs for retirees on fixed incomes, the program offers predictable $50 monthly copayments for Wegovy, Zepbound, and Foundayo. Finance expert Michael Ryan noted the enrollment figures demonstrate "substantial demand" among older Americans.
However, some seniors remain excluded because they qualify for coverage through traditional Medicare Part D, including those with Type 2 diabetes. Retired professor Jeff La Marca, who cannot afford Zepbound's $750 monthly cost, is among those ineligible for the $50 program.
Kevin Thompson, CEO of 9i Capital Group, warned that high participation could cause supply disruptions for patients with chronic illnesses. Officials are evaluating the temporary initiative's impact on Medicare spending through December 31, 2027.
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services official Chris Klomp stated the demonstration aims to make accessing medications "simpler, more predictable, and more consistent." Future program adjustments remain uncertain as the agency assesses long-term consequences.
In January, Jeff La Marca received a prescription for Zepbound, the popular weight-loss drug. But he couldn't afford the $750 a month it cost. Then Medicare launched an 18-month pilot program offering GLP-1 drugs to some enrollees for just $50 a month. La Marca thought that, finally, he could afford it.
Medicare launches a $50-a-month fixed copay for Wegovy, Zepbound and Fondayo from July 2026. This is what beneficiaries should know about eligibility, enrollment, and program boundaries.
