Congo Faces Unprecedented Ebola Outbreak without Approved Vaccine Protection
WHO allocated 20,000 doses for the research vaccination program as officials seek evidence on Ervebo’s protection against Ebola Bundibugyo virus.
- On Saturday, Médecins Sans Frontières launched a vaccination campaign in Ituri province targeting 20,000 frontline health workers to test whether Ervebo offers cross-protection against the Bundibugyo Ebola virus.
- The current Bundibugyo outbreak is the largest in Democratic Republic of the Congo history, with no approved vaccine available, and has infected more than 7,670 people and killed nearly 3,700.
- Although Ervebo is highly effective against Zaire Ebola, the World Health Organization says evidence on its protection against Bundibugyo remains "limited and inconclusive."
- Guyguy Manangama, an epidemiologist and deputy director of Congo Ebola operations with MSF, called the initiative a "race against time," noting that even partial protection could reduce severe illness and death.
- The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations is funding additional Bundibugyo vaccine candidates, including Moderna's mRNA-1469 and the University of Oxford's ChAdOx1 BDBV, to address long-term investment gaps.
