City of Milwaukee Offers Free MMR Vaccines Amid Confirmed Measles Cases in Wisconsin | News Channel 3-12
OCONTO COUNTY, WISCONSIN, AUG 4 – Health officials link the nine cases to out-of-state travel amid Wisconsin's declining vaccination rates, with only 86.4% of students meeting measles vaccine requirements, DHS reported.
- Following confirmation of nine measles cases in Oconto County on Sunday, Aug. 3, the City of Milwaukee Health Department held a news conference on Aug. 4 to address prevention.
- This comes after the Wisconsin Department of Health Services announced the first confirmed measles cases of the year, with nationwide cases at their highest in decades and Wisconsin’s school vaccination rates declining for years.
- Milwaukee’s health department has received 800 vaccine doses to prevent measles, which can linger in the air for up to two hours and infect up to 90% of unvaccinated contacts.
- Residents are encouraged to check their MMR vaccine status through the Wisconsin Immunization Registry, and Simmons said at-risk individuals should call ahead before visiting clinics to protect others.
- About 86 percent of students met immunization requirements for 2024-25, a nearly 3 percent decline, while DHS says public exposure risk from Oconto County cases remains low.
