Two Cases of Measles Confirmed in Grant County
Health officials say 22 of the 23 cases are in unvaccinated people as they urge measles shots before school starts.
On Tuesday, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported 39 measles cases tied to a fast-growing outbreak in southwestern Wisconsin, with the total nearly doubling over the weekend.
Concentrated primarily in Iowa County, the outbreak has expanded to include confirmed cases in Lafayette and Grant counties, with all new cases linked to previously identified infections in the region.
Two doses of the MMR vaccine provide 97% protection against measles, with health data showing all but one of the 23 cases identified this year involved unvaccinated individuals.
DHS Secretary Kirsten Johnson reaffirmed support for current MMR recommendations, stating there is "no new scientific evidence" to justify changing established childhood vaccination guidelines.
Health officials warn that measles is highly contagious and can remain airborne for two hours, urging anyone with symptoms to stay home and call a provider before seeking clinic care.
