MDMK Walks Out of DMK-Led Secular Progressive Alliance After 9 Years, Keeps Future Alliance Options Open
The party is weighing a move to the TVK-led bloc as it prepares a final decision after its general body meets, with two MLAs facing possible resignation.
On Saturday, the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam formally withdrew from the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance , ending a nine-year political association after a General Council meeting.
The MDMK resolution stated it remained in the coalition to prevent what it described as "communal political forces" from gaining ground, while criticizing post-election negotiations involving the AIADMK.
Party leaders may ask two MLAs, T.M. Rajendran and Senthil Selvan , to resign because both contested the 2026 Assembly elections using the DMK's "Rising Sun" symbol.
Following the recent Assembly elections, several former constituents including the Congress and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi exited the coalition to support the Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay-led TVK government.
The MDMK stated it will decide on future electoral alliances at an appropriate time, leaving the DMK with fewer allies amid the shifting political landscape in Tamil Nadu.
