McDonald's Plans $8.5 Billion Modernization by 2036
The company will add AI tools, new menu tests and upgraded kitchen layouts as it seeks to improve accuracy and productivity.
- McDonald's announced an $8.5 billion plan to modernize restaurants globally over the next decade, with CEO Chris Kempczinski stating at a Chicago investor meeting that the company must increase efficiency to capture market share amid flat traffic.
- Kempczinski noted that low-income households making $US45,000 or less are dining out less frequently. "The pressure around cost of living isn't going away," he said, emphasizing the need for value and competitive efficiency.
- To meet shifting dietary trends, the chain will introduce grilled chicken, wraps, and egg bites for 60 million Americans seeking more protein. Skye Anderson, president of McDonald's USA, noted that 30 million Americans using GLP-1 drugs want protein-packed meals.
- ArchIQ, a system developed with Google, will automate inventory and scheduling. Chief Financial Officer Ian Borden said Archy could reduce at least 50 labour hours weekly, while scales improve order accuracy.
- Testing will expand to more markets in the US and Ireland next year. Tiffanie Boyd, McDonald's chief people officer, announced new employee training focused on hospitality and food quality to support modernization efforts.
