Maynard Learns Fate for Umpire Push
The AFL used misconduct charges to lift the penalty, but critics said the 5,000-dollar fines should have been one-match suspensions.
On Saturday, the AFL fined Collingwood defender Brayden Maynard and Gold Coast Suns midfielder Touk Miller $5,000 each for contact with umpire Nicholas Brown during a melee, classifying the incident as "engaging in Any Other Act of Misconduct."
Following a brutal bump from Suns player Ben Long that left Maynard clutching his ribs, Maynard shoved Brown aside to confront Long; Miller then pushed Maynard toward the umpire during the altercation.
Officials classified the contact as misconduct rather than "Careless Contact with an Umpire," allowing the Match Review Officer to impose the $5,000 penalty instead of the fixed $1,500 fine mandated for careless conduct.
North Melbourne legend David King labelled the push the "dumbest" football act of the year, while Channel 7 expert Kane Cornes defended Maynard, noting he was being accosted by multiple Suns players.
While Maynard avoided suspension, Suns player Ben Long received a two-week ban for his initial rough conduct hit; experts argue the AFL needs firmer rules on umpire contact to protect officials.
