Trail Blazers Front Office Executive Leaves for Dallas Mavericks GM Job
Schmitz will oversee scouting, player personnel and strategic planning as Dallas fills its top basketball operations post under new president Masai Ujiri.
On Friday, the Dallas Mavericks hired former Portland Trail Blazers assistant general manager Mike Schmitz as general manager, reporting directly to team president Masai Ujiri.
This appointment marks Ujiri's first major decision since his hiring last Monday; Schmitz brings five years of scouting experience from his tenure as an ESPN draft analyst before joining the Blazers in 2022.
Schmitz assumes the role previously held by Nico Harrison, who was fired in November; the future status of interim general managers Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi remains unclear.
"Mike is one of the most respected evaluators and basketball minds in the NBA," Ujiri said, as Schmitz prepares to oversee operations for a Mavericks team projected to receive a high lottery pick next month.
Both leaders share strong ties to Africa, with Schmitz having assisted the Ugandan national team, positioning them to rebuild an aligned culture after the franchise's recent struggles from trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.
