Matthew McConaughey: Don't try to deny AI

McConaughey has trademarked his voice and partnered with an AI company to control and monetize his image, warning actors to secure rights amid AI's growing role in entertainment.

  • On Feb. 21, at a Variety and CNN town hall, Matthew McConaughey warned AI isn't just coming for actors' jobs and said it is already present alongside Timothée Chalamet.
  • Legal and commercial moves by McConaughey include securing trademarks on his image and signature expressions and having eight trademark patents relating to voice and likeness approved, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.
  • Pointing to current industry work, McConaughey noted `They gotta come to you and go, 'Timothée, I'd like you to be at my 50th birthday party...'` and predicted AI will infiltrate awards categories.
  • He said performers should insist that they own their voice and likeness, and his team must approve any use, ensuring individual agency over AI trespass.
  • As legal protections lag, industry and younger artists confront murky laws while YouTube deploys likeness-detection tools and Matthew McConaughey and Timothée Chalamet say Gen Z will shape AI integration.
