The left-wing minority government in Madrid is shocked by a scandal over misused EU funds. Criticism comes from the European Court of Auditors. In 2024 alone, the Spanish government has parked 2.4 billion euros in pension funds.

According to reports from the Spanish daily newspaper El Mundo, the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has alienated more than ten billion euros from the EU's "NextGenerationEU". Instead of managing the Corona consequences and industrial change, the funds were apparently diverted to civil servants' pensions and the Spanish social system. The European Taxpayer Federation speaks of a "first order scandal."
