Massive North Slope oil rig that toppled near Nuiqsut remains unstable, officials say
The 9.5 million-pound rig spilled up to 4,000 gallons of diesel near critical wildlife habitat; responders face hazards from unstable wreckage and metal debris.
- Doyon Rig 26 toppled during transport on a frozen gravel road about 6 1/2 miles from Nuiqsut on Friday, Jan. 23, 2026, and now lies next to the Kuukpik Pad of ConocoPhillips Alaska.
- Amid concerns about rushed permitting and subsistence impacts, the module was being moved for the winter program that Earthjustice sued over last month, with plaintiffs raising ecological concerns near Teshekpuk Lake.
- State reports say up to 4,000 gallons of diesel may have spilled and the site sits under 500 feet from a Colville River tributary, while the module carried 8,400 gallons diesel, 1,930 gallons hydraulic oil, and 85 gallons ethylene glycol.
- On Monday, officials said responders remained too close to access the unstable wreck, a unified command led by Doyon dispatched a safety team, and eight injured people were treated and released.
- Weighing about 9.5 million pounds, Doyon Rig 26 — nicknamed 'The Beast' — set a 2022 drilling record and had a 2020 slide, while local leaders and tribal groups raised alarm over slow communication.
