Massive fire guts Penticton, B.C., care facility, triggers evacuations
The blaze damaged four nearby homes and forced 12 others to stay evacuated as crews worked around an unstable crane, city officials said.
A massive fire destroyed a 200-bed long-term care construction project in Penticton, B.C., late Wednesday, triggering a local state of emergency and forcing the evacuation of 12 homes.
Penticton Fire Chief Mike Larsson reported that 60 firefighters battled the three-alarm blaze, though suppression efforts remain complicated by an unstable construction crane on-site that poses a safety hazard.
Infrastructure Minister Bowinn Ma stated the government is committed to rebuilding the Skaha Seniors Community, despite the project being only six months into construction when the fire struck.
Seniors Advocate Dan Levitt criticized the province's long-term care capacity, saying seniors are spending more time in hospitals on wait-lists as demand outpaces supply across the region.
This incident follows the government's cancellation of long-term care projects in Delta, Abbotsford, Chilliwack, and Kelowna earlier this year due to financial constraints, deepening provincial capacity pressures.
