Nearly 20,000 residents of a community in western Canada were on standby Wednesday as a wildfire engulfed a mountain overlooking the city of Port Alberni, the latest area threatened in the country's second-worst fire season on record.


In western Canada, the port city of Port Alberni is threatened by a violent fire. The approximately 20,000 inhabitants of the city in the west Canadian province of British Columbia were on high alert on Wednesday because of a fire on Mount Underwood, ten kilometers away. Prior to this, the authorities had announced that the fire on the mountain had "out of control" but no evacuation order had been issued.
