Massachusetts State Police Trooper Injured After Cruiser Struck by Wrong-Way Driver on Route 1 in Peabody
The trooper is expected to recover after state police say the driver was charged with OUI, negligent operation and driving the wrong way.
On Sunday, May 31, 2026, a Massachusetts State Police trooper suffered injuries after a wrong-way driver struck their cruiser on Route 1 in Peabody. Authorities confirmed the trooper is expected to recover.
A trooper from the Danvers Barracks spotted the vehicle heading the wrong way shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday and notified fellow officers who formulated a plan to prevent other vehicles from entering the roadway.
Police identified the driver as 41-year-old Lucas Gustavo Brajak DeAlmeida Benedetto of Newburyport; he faces charges including OUI, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and driving the wrong way.
DeAlmeida Benedetto is expected to be arraigned Monday in Peabody District Court, though it remains unclear if he has obtained an attorney to represent him.
This incident follows the death of Trooper Kevin Trainor, who was killed earlier this month in a similar wrong-way collision near the Lynnfield and Saugus line, prompting lawmakers to propose funding for clearer signage.
