Deadly Listeria Outbreak Sparks Expanded Cheese Recall Across Multiple States
Health officials said the recall covers every cheese product after eight infections and one death were linked to the outbreak, according to state officials.
On Sunday, June 14, Clover Hill Dairy voluntarily recalled all cheese products after Maryland health officials suspended the Mechanicsville company's operating license last month over Listeria contamination concerns.
Maryland health officials suspended the dairy's license on May 30 due to public health risks; the action followed an earlier advisory for soft ricotta cheese products sold across six states.
The recall covers all cheese varieties including ricotta and cheddar, sold in 10-, 12-, and 14-ounce containers, with some products repackaged under brands like "KESSO," "IZALCO," "DE MI PUEBLO," "QUESOS LA RICURA," and "RIO LINDO."
Health officials linked eight Listeria infections and one death to the recalled products; consumers should not eat, sell, or serve items and must return them to retailers for full refunds.
Distributed through retail stores, bulk distributors, and farmers markets, the cheese reached customers in North Carolina, New York, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, and Washington, with labels identifying manufacturer permit number 24-128.
