Marwell Zoo confirms sighting of missing capybara Samba - five months after escape
A photo confirmed by the zoo shows Samba alive, while search teams using drones and a sniffer dog have not yet caught her.
- Marwell confirmed a photo shows missing capybara Samba, who escaped nearly six months ago on March 17. A Marwell spokesperson said: "Yes- the sighting was Samba but we haven't got any further updates to share at the moment."
- After arriving at Marwell, Samba escaped immediately from a temporary enclosure she shared with her sister, Tango, who was quickly recaptured. She has remained on the run since the breakout.
- In the four months since her escape, Samba was reported at several locations including near a pub and sunning herself on a riverbank. Search teams deployed to the Brambridge area after a credible sighting was reported.
- The confirmation means Samba was still alive and moving around the area nearly five months after she escaped. Despite extensive efforts using thermal-imaging drones and a specialist sniffer dog, she has so far avoided being caught.
- Tango remained at Marwell alone until July, when keepers introduced a male capybara named Ripple. Search efforts continue for Samba, who has stayed on the run since her initial breakout.
