Marvel Comics Maestro Stan Lee Set to 'Return' via AI

The deal adds his voice to ElevenLabs’ marketplaces and a reader app, with 11 books planned for monthly narration.

  • On Wednesday, AI audio company ElevenLabs announced an expansive deal with Stan Lee Universe to add the late Marvel Comics co-creator's voice and likeness to its Iconic Marketplace, using professional recordings of Lee, who died November 12, 2018 at age 95.
  • Stan Lee Universe, which signed a 20-year Marvel deal in May 2022 for Lee's rights in films and Disney theme parks, extended that licensing strategy into AI-generated content through the ElevenLabs partnership, positioning it as a continuation of how Lee engaged fans across different media.
  • Starting in June, Lee's voice will narrate books through Stan Lee Book Club of the Month on Eleven Reader, beginning with Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island and adding one title monthly for 12 months; his likeness appears on Creative Templates and the Iconic Voice Marketplace alongside Michael Caine and Judy Garland.
  • ElevenLabs founder Mati Staniszewski told Deadline this month 'there is a lot of interest in what this technology can unlock,' as the company raised $500 million in February 2026 at an $11 billion valuation, more than triple its $6.6 billion valuation from September 2025.
  • The partnership reflects a growing entertainment trend of licensing deceased celebrities' digital likenesses but raises unresolved ethical questions: Lee cannot personally approve his AI likeness, creating a gap between estate approval and individual consent that ElevenLabs positions its consent-based framework as addressing.
