Enoch Burke: Family Members Arrested at Prison in County Roscommon
Judge Brian Cregan said their repeated interruptions forced a February hearing to be suspended and led to two-week jail terms for contempt.
- On Tuesday, gardaí arrested Martina Burke and Ammi Burke at Castlerea Prison, Co Roscommon, following a High Court committal order as the pair attempted to visit Enoch Burke, currently in custody.
- High Court Judge Brian Cregan issued the arrest warrant on March 4 after finding both women in contempt of court for their conduct at a February 20 hearing.
- During the February 20 proceedings, the women were removed by gardaí for 'repeatedly interrupting' the court and 'shouting and roaring at the top of their voices,' which the judge said plunged the hearing 'into chaos.'
- Following a month-long search, Martina and Ammi are being committed to the Dochas Centre at Mountjoy Prison in Dublin to serve a two-week sentence.
- The Dochas Centre is operating at 150 per cent capacity with 219 prisoners in a facility designed for 146, while national prison capacity stands at 125 per cent as of Tuesday.
