Kneeland Was Subject of Welfare Checks at Western Michigan
Coaches called police twice in 2023 over concerns about Kneeland’s mental health and firearm possession after a recent breakup, per Western Michigan University police reports.
- On Nov. 6, Marshawn Kneeland, 24, was found dead of what police said was an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound during a police pursuit in suburban Dallas, and his death occurred during the Dallas Cowboys' bye week.
- Western Michigan University police were twice called to check on Kneeland after coaches Lance Taylor and then-defensive coordinator Lou Esposito said they were concerned he recently separated and questioned his fitness to possess a firearm.
- A friend called 911 in an earlier incident, and Kent County sheriff’s deputies sent Kneeland to a hospital, after he later regained a gun with a social-worker letter.
- They played their first game without him Monday night, winning 33-16 at the Las Vegas Raiders; the Cowboys declined to comment Friday, and the first Dallas home game since his death is Sunday against Philadelphia.
- The more recent incident occurred about 10 months before the Cowboys drafted Kneeland in the second round of the 2024 NFL draft, but the report does not say anything about Kneeland's release from the hospital.
