NDSU Announces Marshall Stewart as Next President
Marshall Stewart aims to increase North Dakota State University enrollment from 11,000 to up to 18,000 students and promote debt-free graduation strategies.
- On Monday, the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education appointed Marshall Stewart, executive vice president for external engagement at Kansas State University, as NDSU's 16th president.
- Stewart succeeds President David Cook, who departed March 1 to lead Iowa State University in Ames, his alma mater. Interim President Rick Berg has managed NDSU since Cook's departure.
- Three finalists participated in 45-minute interviews on Monday before the State Board selected Stewart. The board reached its decision after nearly two-and-a-half hours of closed-session deliberations.
- Stewart aims to grow NDSU enrollment from around 11,000 to as many as 18,000 students. He proposed tuition waivers for out-of-state students as a key enrollment strategy.
- Improving the first-year experience is essential for enrollment growth, Stewart said. He proposed an extended first-year course to connect students with faculty and help them understand available resources.
