Alfalfa sprouts linked to food poisoning illnesses in Minnesota and Wisconsin
Officials say 23 people in Minnesota and 18 in Wisconsin became ill, and investigators are tracing multiple E. coli strains and Salmonella to the sprouts.
On Thursday, the Minnesota Department of Health warned consumers against eating alfalfa sprouts from brands Calco and Minnesota-grower Everything Sprouts linked to a multistate Salmonella and STEC outbreak.
Officials report 23 Minnesotans and 18 Wisconsin residents have become ill with Salmonella or Shiga toxin-producing STEC between July 8 and Aug. 8, with two hospitalized.
Laboratory testing identified distinct bacterial strains including STEC O103, STEC O168, and STEC O26, while MDH coordinates with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration.
People in Minnesota should verify if their sprouts come from these brands and discard them immediately. Those experiencing Symptoms like stomach cramps or diarrhea should contact a healthcare provider.
Seattle food safety lawyer Bill Marler noted that while outbreaks typically involve one germ, alfalfa sprout seeds easily harbor contaminants that spread in warm growing water.
