Marks & Spencer to close 11 cafes in food halls as part of store shake-up
Less than 4% of M&S food shops will close cafes to expand popular food ranges as part of a £300 million investment to grow and modernize stores.
- On Monday, Marks & Spencer announced it will close 11 cafes in smaller food shops, affecting fewer than 4% of the group’s 316 food shops.
- As part of a wider plan, M&S is executing a £300million investment and store rotation programme and committed £90million earlier this year to open six Foodhalls across London.
- Staff in affected cafes will keep roles within stores as M&S repurposes cafe space to expand popular M&S Food products, the company said on Monday.
- The shake-up coincides with plans to grow to around 420 food stores by the end of 2028 as M&S recovers from an April cyber attack that halted online orders for six weeks.
- Modernising food-only sites aims to increase the number of M&S food halls as the business converts full-line stores and improves service for customers.
