Mark Hubbard with Late Surge of Birdies Takes One-Shot Lead at Myrtle Beach Classic
Hubbard birdied four of his last five holes and moved to 16-under 197, keeping him in position for his first PGA Tour win and a PGA Championship spot.
On Saturday, Mark Hubbard fired a 7-under 64 at Dunes Golf and Beach Club, taking a one-shot lead in the Myrtle Beach Classic. He seeks his first PGA Tour title and a spot in next week's PGA Championship.
Making his 274th PGA Tour start, Hubbard credited a patient attitude for his surge. "I think Mark a couple of weeks ago would have gotten pretty frustrated and turned a 64 into a 68," Hubbard said.
Hubbard sits at 16-under 197, one shot ahead of Aaron Rai. Eight players remain within five shots, including 45-year-old Presidents Cup captain Brandt Snedeker and Brooks Koepka, who shot 64.
Returning to the PGA Tour from LIV Golf, Koepka trails by five shots in a tie for eighth. "I feel like I'm striking it as good as I ever have," Koepka said, citing improved form.
Koepka and Rai have already secured spots for next week's major at Aronimink, ensuring their participation regardless of this weekend's outcome. Hubbard continues his quest for his first PGA Tour title.
