Marineland Dolphin Dies Weeks After Move to Aquarium in Spain
Oceanografic Valencia is investigating after Echo died following a 19-hour transfer from Marineland, where 34 animals were relocated over the summer.
- Oceanografic Valencia announced that Echo, a blind Black Sea bottlenose dolphin believed to be 30 years old, died Wednesday in Spain weeks after her transfer from Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ont.
- Marineland shipped Echo and three other dolphins plus two belugas on an epic 19-hour voyage on Aug. 26, 2026, after the park closed in 2024 due to financial constraints and inability to provide care.
- Veterinarians from all parks cleared the animals for transport after Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson approved updated health information; Oceanografic said, "In recent hours, Echo began experiencing difficulties swallowing and respiratory problems and was transferred to the medical pool."
- Four belugas and one dolphin have now died since Marineland relocated 30 belugas and four dolphins to five parks over summer, with one beluga, Jelly Bean, dying last week; both Shedd Aquarium and Oceanografic are investigating.
- Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson previously blocked a deal with Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in China, saying the nation lacked Canada's captivity laws; Marineland had threatened to euthanize animals without emergency funding before the transfer.
