- On Wednesday, Maria Riva died in her sleep at her son Peter Riva's home in Gila, New Mexico, at age 100, just weeks before her 101st birthday on Dec. 13.
- Born Maria Elisabeth Sieber on Dec. 13, 1924 in Berlin, she was the only child of Marlene Dietrich and Rudolf Sieber and became a live-television pioneer with over 500 teleplays and Emmy nominations in 1952 and 1953.
- Riva also turned to writing and editing about Dietrich, publishing the 1992 biography 'Marlene Dietrich', co-authoring a 2001 photo book, editing a 2005 poetry volume, and releasing her 2017 novel 'You Were There Before My Eyes' at age 91.
- She is survived by three sons, seven grandchildren and a great-granddaughter, and Peter Riva said the family is comforted knowing she now joins her husband of 50 years, William, and her eldest son, J. Michael Riva.
- Her career positioned her as a cross‑media pioneer by drawing television personalities into other media, and she preserved Dietrich's legacy by selling much of her mother's estate to the Deutsche Kinemathek museum in Berlin.
