Philippines' Marcos to Discuss Trade and Security During US Visit as Tariffs Loom
PHILIPPINES, JUL 18 – The leaders will address a proposed 20% U.S. tariff on Philippine exports and discuss expanding U.S. investments to boost economic and defense cooperation, officials said.
- On July 22, 2025, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. meets U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, during an official visit from July 20–22, to strengthen bilateral trade, security, and regional cooperation.
- With the goal of strengthening the alliance, Raquel Solano said, while noting this is the first ASEAN head of state invited to meet Trump since he took office earlier this year.
- On trade tensions, Raquel Solano noted the proposed 20% tariff on Filipino goods, and the two leaders will also discuss maritime issues.
- Despite his packed schedule, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will meet US officials on July 21 and will not hold a community meeting due to his busy itinerary.
- Solano noted that next year marks the 80th diplomatic anniversary and 75th alliance, and Marcos plans to invite Trump to the 2026 East Asia Summit in Manila.
