World Record Holder Sawe to Defend Berlin Marathon Title in September
Sabastian Sawe will return to defend his Berlin Marathon title on September 27, organisers confirmed on Wednesday. The 31-year-old marathon runner aims to improve his record on one of the world's fastest courses.
Last month, Sawe became the first man to run a marathon in under two hours in an official race at the London Marathon. His historic sub-two-hour performance in Kenya has positioned him to challenge existing records.
The 2026 Berlin Marathon is expected to attract almost 60,000 athletes from around 160 countries. The course is regarded as one of the quickest in the world, with nine men's world records set there between 1998 and 2022.
Sawe previously finished the Berlin Marathon in two hours, two minutes and 16 seconds in 2025, clocking the year's best time. Despite temperatures reaching up to 25 degrees Celsius, he demonstrated capability on the course.
Eliud Kipchoge still holds the Berlin Marathon course record at 2:01:09 from 2022. Sawe said, "We'll see what happens on race day," signaling cautious optimism ahead of September.
Sabastian Sawe was the first person to run 42 kilometres under two hours in London. In September, the Kenyan wants to defend his previous year's success in Berlin – the route is considered one of the fastest in the world.
