Many public servants ran for federal office in the spring — only one of them made it

CANADA, AUG 11 – Caroline Desrochers is the sole federal public servant elected in 2025, out of 54 permitted to run, marking a rare transition from public service to Parliament.

  • On Aug. 11, 2025, The Canadian Press reported that only one former public servant, Caroline Desrochers, ran for office last spring, with the majority not succeeding.
  • According to the commission spokesperson, the Public Service Commission of Canada granted permission to 54 federal public servants after receiving requests from 65 individuals.
  • Experience with Global Affairs Canada: Caroline Desrochers worked 24 years there, including a first posting in Haiti, and spent about a decade on Canada-U.S. relations in New York.
  • Her priorities include exploring options for Build Canada Homes within Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada, and focusing on housing for students.
  • Future projections show departments face program spending cuts of up to 15 per cent, and Desrochers also aims to modernize the public service, Ottawa said recently.
