Many Delaware Beachgoers Feel the Sting of a Blooming Jellyfish Population
DELAWARE, AUG 6 – Delaware beaches reported over 1,200 jellyfish stings in 2025, a fourfold increase from last year, driven by warming waters fostering jellyfish blooms, officials said.
- Tracking of jellyfish stings commenced this year, with over 1,200 cases reported so far, and Fenwick Island State Park recorded 92 stings on a single July day, said the Delaware State Beach Patrol.
- Warming ocean waters create ideal conditions for jellyfish, and Bayha said that their lack of natural predators leaves them as an ecological dead end.
- Maine’s Ogunquit Fire Department warned beachgoers in June as blooms spread from Maine to Florida, where Florida’s Volusia County reported hundreds of stings around Memorial Day weekend.
- Responding to the surge, lifeguards took three to urgent care after stings and began carrying vinegar solutions, Malloy-Harder said she visited two stores to find vinegar.
- Looking ahead, Bayha predicts jellyfish will die when waters cool, and Muller-Parker hopes more research will clarify ecological impacts and improve safety advisories.
