Manus Splits From Meta After China Orders Reversal of $2bn Deal

Manus will resume operating independently, and some users must back up data after regulators ordered the parties to unwind the acquisition.

  • On Tuesday, Singapore-based AI startup Manus announced it will soon resume operating as an independent company after Chinese regulators demanded Meta unwind its $2 billion acquisition.
  • China's National Development and Reform Commission prohibited the deal in April, citing foreign investment rules and requiring the parties to withdraw the acquisition transaction.
  • Manus instructed users to back up data generated on or after December 29, 2025, the date the Meta deal was announced, as information needs to be deleted to comply with regulatory requirements.
  • "This is part of our separation from Meta; we must take this step to comply with regulatory requirements in specific parts of the world," the company wrote in a statement.
  • Beijing has tightened tech export controls on cross-border deals amid intensifying AI competition with Washington, impacting Meta's broader strategy to build a subscription business using AI agents.
