Manitoba expands flood assistance programs as cleanup continues
The province is sending advance cheques and matching Red Cross donations as officials say recovery costs could approach $300 million.
On Friday, Premier Wab Kinew announced the province is mailing $500 advance cheques to about 1,800 applicants and launching a $15 million matched donation program with the Canadian Red Cross.
Torrential June rains devastated parts of the Parkland region, including Swan River and Dauphin, leaving 48 communities under states of local emergency.
The province has already advanced $7.8 million to 12 communities, while volunteer disaster-response group Team Rubicon is expanding with five teams of 25 people.
Homeowners can begin repairs if they document the process with photos, Director of Manitoba Emergency Management Organization Christine Stevens said, while the province works through the weekend to expedite payments.
Team Rubicon's deployment in the Swan Valley region will continue until at least the third week of August, while Kinew expects requests for assistance to increase as crews reach more residents.
