Carney nominates Manitoba’s Glenn Joyal to Supreme Court
The independent advisory board shortlisted candidates for the vacancy after Justice Sheilah Martin retired at the end of May, officials said.
On Monday, June 22, 2026, Prime Minister Mark Carney nominated Manitoba Chief Justice Glenn Joyal to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court of Canada.
The selection process for the vacancy began in March to replace Justice Sheilah Martin, who retired at the end of May.
Joyal has served as chief justice of the Court of King's Bench of Manitoba since 2011, with a career spanning more than 25 years and recognition including the Golden Jubilee Medal and King Charles III Coronation Medal.
Federal Justice Minister Sean Fraser praised Joyal's "extraordinary service and commitment to the legal community," while Carney noted his integrity and judgment.
Candidates for the nine-judge Supreme Court must have been a superior court judge or member of the bar for at least 10 years, according to appointment rules.
