Deputy fatally shot during home welfare check in Virginia. Search underway for suspect

Authorities say the suspect fled after the shooting, and the U.S. Marshals Service is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

  • On Friday night, two Carroll County Sheriff deputies were shot during a welfare check at a home on Fancy Gap Highway. Deputy Logan Utt sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased; the second deputy was struck in his ballistic vest and remains in stable condition.
  • The shooting occurred after deputies made contact with suspect Michael Puckett, who authorities say opened fire on the responding officers. Puckett fled the scene immediately and remains at large.
  • Authorities have launched a "coordinated law enforcement search" for the suspect. Officials warn Puckett "should be considered armed and extremely dangerous," urging the public not to approach him and to immediately call 911.
  • The United States Marshals Service is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to Puckett's arrest. Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger wrote on social media that her thoughts are with the deputy's family and the Carroll County Sheriff.
  • "Carroll County has lost a hero, and a family has suffered an unimaginable loss," the sheriff's office said. The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Wytheville Field Office continues investigating the active incident.
