Manchester City threaten to sue Real Madrid presidential hopeful over Haaland
Manchester City said there is no clause allowing Erling Haaland’s exit and is considering legal action over use of the striker’s image.
Manchester City is considering legal action after Real Madrid presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme displayed a 'Haaland 9' shirt on Spanish television, claiming striker Erling Haaland had a release clause to join the club.
The contested Real Madrid presidential election, the first since 2006, encourages candidates to make headline-grabbing transfer pledges to win over club members ahead of the vote.
Haaland signed a contract extension in January 2025 leaving eight seasons on his nine-and-a-half-year deal, while father Alfie Haaland and agent Rafaela Pimenta called transfer claims 'all very entertaining but not true.'
A City spokesperson stated 'there is no chance of this happening' and no contractual clause exists, warning the club may sue over unauthorized use of Haaland's image.
On Wednesday, incumbent president Florentino Perez campaigned for an eighth term by revealing Jose Mourinho wearing a Real Madrid shirt, signaling the manager's potential return to the Bernabeu.
The Madrid election campaign is in full swing. The presidential candidates are promising big signings on a rolling basis. This could lead to legal action from Manchester City.
