Man Wrongly Imprisoned for 43 Years Taken by ICE
Subramanyam Vedam was detained by ICE under a decades-old deportation order after spending 43 years wrongfully imprisoned for murder, despite his recent exoneration and charge dismissal.
- On Oct. 3, 2025, Subramanyam "Subu" Vedam was released from Huntingdon State Correctional Institution after his murder conviction was vacated, then detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement on a decades-old deportation order.
- A Centre County judge overturned the conviction in August 2025 after ruling prosecutors illegally withheld an FBI report, while the Pennsylvania Innocence Project revealed the bullet wound did not match the alleged weapon three years ago.
- Arrested in 1982, Subramanyam "Subu" Vedam was convicted in 1983 and 1988, spending more than four decades incarcerated while earning three degrees including an MBA with 4.0 and leading literacy programs.
- He is being held at the Moshannon Valley Processing Center while ICE processes him for removal; Vedam's family and attorneys have filed motions to reopen the case, and the government has until Oct. 24 to respond.
- Mike Truppa, spokesperson for the Vedam family, said, `After 43 years of wrongful imprisonment, he's being punished twice`, while family and advocates argue deporting Vedam to India, which he left at nine months, is unjust.
