Man whose parents were kidnapped after $245M Bitcoin theft has pleaded guilty to federal charges
- Veer Chetal, a 19-year-old from Danbury, Connecticut, pleaded guilty this week to federal fraud and money laundering charges related to a $245 million Bitcoin theft last August in Washington, D.C.
- The theft was linked to a broader alleged online racketeering case indicted in May, involving 13 individuals including Malone Lam, which reportedly resulted in the theft of more than $260 million in cryptocurrency from both U.S. and international victims over a period spanning late 2023 to late 2024.
- Authorities accused Chetal, Lam, and Jeandiel Serrano of conducting online social engineering attacks targeting cryptocurrency holders and found over $500,000 in cash, jewelry, watches, and high-end clothing during raids on Chetal’s apartment and his parents’ home in September.
- A week after the theft, six men allegedly kidnapped and assaulted Chetal’s parents in Danbury during a failed ransom plot, which was quickly foiled by eyewitnesses and an off-duty FBI agent, leading to multiple arrests including a seventh man previously involved in a dispute with Chetal.
- Chetal faces a prison sentence of 19 to 24 years, fines ranging from $50,000 to $500,000, possible restitution, and the risk of deportation, while his father was dismissed from his position at Morgan Stanley due to the kidnapping and his son's involvement in the criminal matter.
