Florida Schedules Chadwick Willacy Execution for 1990 Palm Bay Murder
The state’s fifth execution of 2026 follows rejected appeals and a 1995 resentencing for the Palm Bay killing.
- Chadwick Scott Willacy, 58, is scheduled to receive a three-drug lethal injection Tuesday evening at Florida State Prison near Starke for the 1990 killing of Marlys Sather.
- Records indicate Willacy burglarized Sather's Palm Bay home in September 1990 during her lunch break from work. After she discovered him, he attacked her with a blunt object, bound her with wire and tape, doused her in gasoline, and set her ablaze.
- An autopsy determined Sather died from smoke inhalation, indicating she was alive when set on fire. Willacy was convicted of first-degree murder, burglary, robbery and arson, then resentenced to death in 1995 with an 11-1 jury recommendation.
- The Florida Supreme Court denied appeals filed by Willacy last Wednesday. This execution marks Florida's fifth in 2026, following a record 19 executions in the state last year.
- James Ernest Hitchcock, 70, is scheduled to receive a lethal injection on April 30, marking another execution in Florida later this month as the state continues high-frequency death sentences.
